Background

The Department of Media, Creative Industry and Intellectual Property was formed following the
Civil Service Restructuring in December 2022. The Department functions with the combined
mandates of erstwhile Department of Information and Media, MoIC, Department of Intellectual
Property (DoIP), MoEA, and Agency for Promotion of Indigenous Crafts (APIC).

Mandates

Formulate and update laws aligning with international standards on intellectual property, including Traditional Knowledge (TK) and Traditional Cultural Expressions (TCEs).

Establish a streamlined system for granting titles and rights to intellectual property.

Promote public knowledge and understanding of intellectual property, fostering awareness.

Stimulate a vibrant ecosystem that supports and nurtures the growth of the creative industry through innovation, collaboration.

Establish Authentic Bhutanese Craft Market/ Village and Develop Craft Clusters in the Communities

Develop market linkages and platforms, and promote and preserve Bhutanese Arts and Crafts

Create an enabling environment for the sustainable development of media enterprises.

Facilitate professional development of the media industry through education and capacity development programs

Develop and undertake media and information literacy programs.
